Alice May's Story

Text size

Alice May (Gniewek) Farrenkopf passed away at home on June 25, 2017. She was 77.
Mom, Alice, was a great artist and won many awards while attending Fordson High School in Dearborn, Mich. She enjoyed traveling and dancing. After graduating, she worked for Michigan Federal Credit Union.
After a trip to visit her brother and sister-in-law in Rockport and dinner with their school teacher neighbor, she became the "girl who came to dinner and never left." Alice and Frank were married on August 19, 1967, and they made Rockport their lifelong home.
Her love of cooking and baking resulted in her kitchen always being filled with friends stopping by to have a cup of coffee and a tasty treat.
Over the years, she and Frank parlayed their love of being host and cooking to catering at the Tuck Inn, the Sandy Bay Yacht Club, St. Joachim’s, and for private parties.
Once the kids were older, Alice began working for Meringer Enterprises, mainly at The House of Glass.
After her children, her grandchildren were her passion! Gathering around her table in her small, warm kitchen, everyone would sing and be silly. Her grandchildren enjoyed her company and loved to tease her about her fear of spiders. In more recent years, she learned how to use the power of the internet to continue seeing and enjoying her grandchildren.
Alice is survived by her brother, Larry Gniewek of Tucson, Ariz., and her five children, Anna Farrenkopf and Mireille of Akkrum, the Netherlands, Kristin McCauley and Bill of Dracut, Mass., Alane McNamara and Bill of Burlington, Vt., Dan Farrenkopf and Misha of Sullivan, Maine, and Julie Lees and Chris of Naples, Maine. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Sarah and Finley McNamara, Jeremy and Meridith McCauley, Justin and Caitlin Lees, Rita and Field Farrenkopf; and many nieces and nephews.
Alice was predeceased by her husband, Francis (Frank). She was also recently predeceased by her brother, Conrad Gniewek, and her sister-in-law, Theresa Gniewek.
Per Alice's request, there will be no services. A private family gathering will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington St., Gloucester, MA. Online condolences may be given at www.greelyfuneralhome.com.
