Barbara's Story

ROCKPORT: Barbara E. McCarthy, 89, of Rockport, wife of the late Joseph S. McCarthy, passed away on Friday, March 4, 2016 at the Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following a brief illness.

She was born in Troy, Ohio, on October 9, 1926, daughter of the late Arthur and Mary (Kroger) Hansford.

Barbara was a graduate of Troy High School in Troy, Ohio. She and Joseph married on September 26, 1945, and had several moves before settling in Canton, Ohio in 1958.

She was employed for many years at the Eastern Ohio Association of the United Church of Christ in Canton, Ohio as an administrative assistant.

She moved from Ohio to Rockport, in 2000 to be close to her daughter, Kathie, son Jim, daughter-in-law, Sarah, and beloved granddaughter Elizabeth upon the death of her husband of 55 years.

Barbara’s creativity came out in many forms. She loved cross stitch, designing and building miniatures, and she was a master at keeping in touch with her family, her many friends and especially their children.

Barbara was a loving, accepting person who had a way of letting people know she was for them, and she will be greatly missed by her family and by all who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathie McCarthy of Rockport; son, James S. McCarthy and his wife, Sarah Wetzel of Gloucester; her granddaughter, Elizabeth McCarthy of Riverside, Calif.; her sister-in-law, Phyllis Hansford of Miamisburg, Ohio; her niece, Carol Smith and her husband Ed of Guilford, Ind; and her nephew, Patrick Hansford and his wife, Sheila of Centerville, Ohio and her grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her sisters, Catherine Clark, June Somers; her brother, Arthur Wayne Hansford, his son Scott, and Scott’s son, David.

Her Memorial Service will be held at the First Congregational Church of Rockport on Sunday, March 13, at 4 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. There will be no visiting hours and the burial will be held at a later date in Ohio.
