ROCKPORT, MA: Carolyn Tanner (Myers) Cronin, 89, of Rockport, Mass., passed away peacefully at her residence on Tuesday morning, February 9, 2016. Tanner was born in Springfield, Mass., on January 29, 1927, the daughter of the late Marcus C. and Mathilde (Preissel) Myers. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in mathematics from Kansas State College in 1948. She was among the first computer programmers. She worked on the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System, as well as some of the first airline reservation and stock-market automation systems. She was a passionate feminist, Democrat, and Unitarian. A single parent after 1957, Tanner worked hard to give her children every opportunity. An accomplished artist, her medium was mostly water colors, although she dabbled with oils as well. She loved the ocean and animals, especially cats and German Shepherds. A fiercely independent woman, she had traveled widely for business and for pleasure. She was a resident of Rockport for 30 years and will be missed very much by her friends and family. She is survived by her daughter, Deirdre "Derry" Gleason and her husband, Bob of Vermont; her son, Jonathan T. Cronin and his wife, Theresa, of Lexington, Mass.; a sister, Vickie Winston of Boulder, Colo.; five grandchildren, Bobby Gleason and his wife, Iona Leighton of Denver, Colo., Sammy Gleason of Colorado Springs, Colo., Tim Gleason of Winona, Minn., Aurora Fullerton and her wife, Miranda of Plainfield, N.H., and Abigail Cronin of Lexington, Mass.
There are no visiting hours and it was her wish to be cremated. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to The Trevor Project at www.thetrevorproject.org or the Unitarian Universalist Society of Rockport. Arrangements are by the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester. Online condolences may be given at www.greelyfuneralhome.com.
