Caterina (Ingrande) Giacalone, 83, of Gloucester, wife of the late Capt. Giovanni “John” Giacalone, passed away at the Addison Gilbert Hospital on Thursday afternoon, September 1, 2016.
Caterina was born in Mazara del Vallo, Italy on March 24, 1933, the daughter of the late Andrew and Antoinette (Giacalone) Ingrande. Caterina came to America with her husband and six children in 1966 aboard the Michelangelo, to provide a better life for their family. She immediately joined the work force and ended that journey at Gorton’s Seafood Center, where she worked for over 20 years. There she made some of her fondest lifelong friends. Caterina’s greatest joy in life was her family, her children and great grandchildren. She loved to cook for them and was always supporting them in all their scholastic and sports achievements. Her house would be filled with the most amazing aromas of food, especially Sundays, when she’d start cooking early morning and wouldn’t stop until all her family and friends were fed and happy. She will be fondly missed by all who had the opportunity to meet her or hug her. She always gave you a cup of coffee, even if you didn’t want one. She is survived by her children, Nino Giacalone and his wife Angelina, Andrew Giacalone and his wife, Giovanna, Joseph Giacalone, Rosa Buscaino and her husband Michael, Antoinette Scuderi and her husband, Joe, Nicoletta Lopes and her husband, Miguel; her grandchildren, Trina Rathe, Nicole Gentile, Jon Giacalone, Mariana Giacalone, Trina Doyle, John Giacalone, Joey Giacalone, Joe Buscaino, Rosa Francis, Trina Sutera, Alexandria Buscaino, Nino Scuderi, Josie Scuderi, Trina Scuderi, Bomino Lopes, Kayla Lopes and 21 great-grandchildren, including Michael and Isaiah Francis for whom she lived with for her last years. She was predeceased by her husband Giovanni of 49 years; her sisters, Mary Giacalone and Filippa Pavia.
Respecting Caterina’s last wishes, there will not be any visiting hours. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 6 at 10 a.m. in St. Ann’s Church, Holy Family Parish.
