Catherine J.'s Story
Catherine J (O’Connor) Gilmore wife of John P. Gilmore died on Tuesday, June 14th, 2016. Kay, as she was known, lived in Manchester for 59 years before moving to Oceanview at Landmark in Beverly, in 2014 with her husband, John.
Kay was born in Bellows Falls, Vt. on September 27, 1926 to John and Dorothy O’Connor.
She was a graduate of Saint Charles Elementary School and Bellows Falls High School, Class of 1944. She received a degree in elementary education from Castleton State College in 1947. Kay taught fourth grade in Springfield, Vt., Wethersfield, Conn. and Manchester, Mass.
Kay and John were married in June of 1957.
Kay was very active in Sacred Heart parish; altar boy coordinator, as well as, the Director of Religious Education for many years. Kay also was the Study Hall aide at Manchester High School for 10 years.
Kay enjoyed the Tuesday Night Ladies bowling league, square dancing, traveling (Colorado, Alaska, Ireland, Bahamas, Nova Scotia and the National Parks with her husband). She was active in the Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts. Her favorite hobbies were knitting and sewing.
Kay is survived by her husband of 58 years, John P. Gilmore, son, Mark P. Gilmore and his wife, Tracey of Summerville, S.C., daughter, Jean Cassanos and husband, Greg of Manchester; daughter, Ellen Gilmore of Manchester, as well as son-in-law, Tom Prentiss of Essex; and her four grandchildren, Megan (Gilmore) Olsen-Saville and husband, Gary of Fairbanks, AK, Nathan and Allyson Gilmore of Summerville, S.C. and Olivia Prentiss of Essex.
She was preceded in death by her eldest daughter, Anne (Gilmore) Prentiss; her parents and her siblings, Dorothy Fontaine, Donald O’Connor, Gerald O’Connor, William O’Connor.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church, 62 School Street, Manchester, on Saturday, June 18, 2016 at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Burial will follow at the Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Manchester. There will be no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to the Alzheimer’s Association, 480 Pleasant St, Watertown, MA 02472-2407.
