Dorothy C.'s Story
Dorothy Carolyn Buckley, 89, of Gloucester, beloved wife of the late William D. Buckley, Jr., passed away on August 19, 2016, in the presence of her loving family at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers. Dorothy was born in Gloucester on January 4, 1927. She was the daughter of the late Alice (Rice) Dagle and Spencer Dagle, Sr.
Dorothy graduated from Gloucester High School in 1945, where she was a member of the cheerleading squad and girls drill team. She helped plan many GHS class reunions and was also a lifelong member of the YMCA. Dorothy was happily married to Billy for 63 years. They frequented Good Harbor Beach and Niles Beach and loved to dance and travel.
Dorothy was employed for many years at the National Marine Fisheries and Gloucester Building Center.
Dorothy was very proud of her family and spent lots of time celebrating birthdays and special events. She loved attending her grandchildren’s sporting events and supported Gloucester High School sports throughout her life. She enjoyed walks on the Boulevard, dinning out, and shopping. She had many special friends, in particular her club girls and knitting group.
Dorothy was predeceased by her brother, E. Preston Dagle and wife, Cecilia of Groveland; brother, Spencer Dagle, Jr. and wife, Madelyn of Gloucester; brother, Kenneth Dagle of Rockport; sister, Marjorie Joslin of Essex; brother-in-law, John “Jack” Buckley of Gloucester; and granddaughter, Laura Wood of Gloucester.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Patricia Dagle of Rockport; daughter, Susan Wood and companion, Peter Carty of Gloucester; son, Bruce Buckley and his wife, Marie of Mansfield; daughter, Christine Buckley of Salem; daughter, Jane Cahill and husband, Steve of Gloucester; Anne McKinney and husband, William of St. Petersburg, Fla. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Kristin, Jimmy and Colleen Wood; Kevin Buckley and wife, Stephanie; Peter, Daniel and Annalies Buckley; Heather Muelle and husband, Lars; Abigayle and Brett Cahill; Seth and Caleb McKinney; great-granddaughter, Bayla Buckley; and many nieces and nephews.
Our family extends our sincere thanks to her many caregivers, the staff at The Herrick House in Beverly, and The Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers.
Her funeral will be held from the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester on Wednesday, August 24, at 8:45 a.m., followed by a Mass celebrated in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church at 9:30 a.m. The burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery, Gloucester. Visiting hours in the Greely Funeral Home are on Tuesday, August 23, from 4 to 7 p.m.
