Dr. Edward J.'s Story
Edward J. Conway, M.D., of Rockport, Mass., passed away peacefully on September 19, 2017, at the age of 98. He was born in Hartford, Ct., the son of the late Charles and Jane (Mulhall) Conway. He was a longtime resident of West Hartford, Ct., before retiring to Rockport, where he had resided since 1984.
Ed graduated from Hartford High School where he was a member of the undefeated state champion swim team. He was a member of the Class of 1942 at Trinity College where he served as class president, captain of the swim team, and state record holder in backstroke. He graduated from Yale Medical School in 1944. A WWII Veteran, he served in the Army Medical Corps., and was discharged as a captain. Ed practiced medicine for 35 years at Hartford Hospital and was Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Allergy and Immunology, retiring as Chief of Allergy and Immunology.
He was a truly well-rounded person and loved by all who knew him. He was a compassionate doctor, painter, golfer, cook, lobsterman, lifelong learner and great handyman around the house. He loved the Red Sox and looked forward to every game. He found great enjoyment in local activities associated with the Rockport Library and Council on Aging. He was proud to serve on the board of the Friends of the Rockport Council on Aging for many years.
Ed was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Shirley Johnson Conway. He was also predeceased by his brothers, Charles and Robert, and sister, Jane Conway.
He is survived by his three daughters, Nancy Conway Tehrani (Stuart), Susan Conway Solomon (Allan), and Shirley Conway. He also leaves five grandchildren, Edward Tehrani, Steven Tehrani and Joanne Tehrani Crudup (Brooks), Scott Solomon (Julia) and Brian Solomon; as well as three great-grandchildren, Griffin and Walter Crudup, and Owen Solomon. He is also survived by sister-in-law, Barbara Conway and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the Friends of the Rockport Council on Aging, 58 Broadway, Rockport, MA 01966.
