Floria L. (Torto)'s Story
Mrs. Floria L. (Torto) Crowell, 89, formerly of Gloucester, passed away Sunday, August 14, 2016, at Ivy Hall Assisted Living in Alpharetta, Ga. Beloved wife of the late John Edward (“Jack”) Crowell, Jr. of Gloucester, Floria was born February 16, 1927, in Lynn, Mass., daughter of the late Mario and Susan (Tenaglia) Torto.
A devoted member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Lynn, she attended Chandler Secretarial School and worked in Boston and at GE in Lynn for many years before moving to Gloucester upon her marriage in 1957. For many years, Floria worked as a legal secretary for Porcello Law offices. First for John Porcello, and later for his son, Anthony. Having never learned to drive, she was known to walk all over Gloucester to work, to the bank, to the library, to church, and to the beauty parlor. She was well liked wherever she went and well known by her smile.
Floria treasured the time she spent with her family and friends. She enjoyed travel and was always ready to go whether to Georgia and other southern states, Las Vegas, California, on a cruise, or to Italy. She got a lot of joy out of joining the Elks of Gloucester in her later years, where she made many friends and enjoyed their trips and outings as well as the Friday night get-togethers with friends. She was a long time parishioner at Holy Family Parish St. Ann’s Church.
Floria is survived by her daughter, Susan and son-in-law, Gary, of Duluth, Ga. She is also survived by her brother, Nicholas Torto and his wife, Claire; and Arthur Torto and his wife, Ann of Las Vegas. She will be missed by her cherished nieces and nephews, especially Jacqueline and Michael, who were like a son and daughter to her. She is also survived by several grand-nieces and nephews and by a very special family friend, Jill Maguire, who was also like a daughter to her.
Floria’s Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Family Parish in St. Ann’s Church, Prospect St., Gloucester on Saturday, August 20, 2016, at 11 a.m. Visiting hours will be in the Pike-Newhall Funeral Home, 61 Middle St., Gloucester on Friday, August 19, 2016, from 4 to 7 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Gloucester. Floria’s family asked that donations in her name be made to Angels Among Us Pet Rescue, the rescue for which her daughter is also devoted, at Angel’s Among Us Pet Rescue, P.O. Box 821, Alpharetta, GA 30009 or see www.angelsrescue.org/donatenow/. Floria had a heart for animals and was concerned for their welfare, and she loved her furry grandchildren greatly.
