Franco Casagrande, 76, of Gloucester, died Saturday, Oct. 29, at Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a long illness. He was the husband of Rita (Bamonti) Casagrande.
He was born Feb. 18, 1940, in Porto D’Ascoli, Italy, to Guido and Teresa (Peroni) Casagrande. He and his wife moved to Gloucester in 1973, after living for several years in Montreal.
Mr. Casagrande was a carpenter for many years, remodeling and building many homes on the North Shore. His fine craftsmanship and attention to detail was appreciated by those who lived in the homes he worked on. One of his projects was building Happy Day School, owned by his daughter-in-law, Susan. He built the home he and his wife raised their family.
Mr. Casagrande enjoyed following Boston sports teams, especially the Bruins, with his two sons. He was an avid gardener who greatly enjoyed growing tomatoes. He and his wife enjoyed traveling to Italy to visit family and to Montreal to visit friends. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his two grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Rita Casagrande, of Gloucester; two sons, Alessandro Casagrande and his wife, Susan (Fosberry), and Franco Casagrande Jr. and his wife Melissa (Daly); two grandchildren, Timothy and Emilia Casagrande, all of Beverly; one brother, Giancarlo Casagrande and his wife Santina of Porto D’Ascoli, and two sisters, Paola Casagrande, wife of the late Bernardino Voltattorni, of Porto D’Ascoli and Lucia Casagrande, wife of Luciano Croci of Rome, Italy, and many nieces and nephews.
His funeral will be held from the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester on Thursday, November 3, at 8:45 a.m. followed by a Mass celebrated in St. Ann’s Church, Holy Family Parish at 9:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend.
The burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery, Gloucester.
Visiting hours in the Greely Funeral Home are on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m.
