Frederick J.'s Story
Frederick J. Sallah, 88, beloved husband of the late Josephine V. (Sabato) Sallah of Gloucester, passed away on Thursday, April 21, 2016 surrounded by his loving family after an extended illness. Born in Gloucester on September 20, 1927, Fred was the son of the late Habeeb and Rose (Karem) Sallah.
Frederick graduated from St. Ann High School in 1945. After serving in the U.S. Navy, he attended Wentworth Institute of Boston and graduated with a degree in Steam & Diesel Engineering. He worked as an engineer for General Electric in Lynn for 40 years. In addition to his work at GE, he founded the Cape Ann Glass company with his brother, Majeed.
Fred and Josephine married in 1959. He is survived by his three children: Stephen and his wife, Julie Sallah of Hopewell Junction, N.Y., Gregory Sallah of Manchester, N.H. and Stephanie and husband, Ken Tashjy of Westford.
He was proud of his grandchildren, Margaret (Sallah) Heider and husband, Thomas, Kevin Sallah, Mary Alice Sallah, Brandon Sallah and wife, Ashley, Nathan Tashjy, Alexandra Tashjy, Kenneth F. Tashjy, and great-grandchild, Ashdon Sallah.
He was a fun-loving uncle, baby sitter, and story teller to his many nieces and nephews.
He is survived by his brother, Majeed and wife, Aline of Gloucester and sister, Regina and husband, David Girard of Magnolia. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Thomas and sisters, Olga, Lila, Josephine, Marie, and Constance.
Frederick was a lifelong and enthusiastic member of St. Ann’s Church and served in the Holy Name Society, Legion of Mary, Knights of Columbus and Parish Council. The St. Ann's Legion of Mary, founded by Frederick's mother Rose, is the second oldest active chapter of the Legion of Mary in the country.
He lived the life he wanted and, except for his brief illness, remained in his family home. He was a man of faith, of family, of country and of industry. He was an engineer at heart and could disassemble and repair anything. He loved jokes and had the same two dozen that he told for eighty years.
He will be greatly missed by his many friends and family.
Fred’s Funeral will be from the Pike-Newhall Funeral Home, 61 Middle St., Gloucester, on Wednesday, April 27, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Family Parish in St. Ann’s Church, Prospect St. Gloucester at 11:30 a.m. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday afternoon in the Funeral Home from 3 to 7 p.m. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Gloucester. In lieu of flowers the family has asked for donations in Fred’s memory be made to Holy Family Parish 60 Prospect St. Gloucester, MA 01930.
