George Winchester Stone passed away peacefully at his home in Rockport on June 20.
George was born in May 1945 in Troy, N.Y., to Rita (Rooney) and Eric W. Stone and attended lower schools in Cambridge. George's family summered in Rockport before moving there in 1960. George attended Rockport High School, graduating in 1963. While at Rockport High George played on the "Vikings" basketball team and was captain his senior year, taking the team to a championship game at the Boston Garden.
After graduation George attended Pace University. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1966 and served aboard the aircraft carrier USS INTREPID. His tours of duty included Vietnam, Hong Kong and China. After an honorable discharge from the Navy in 1970 with the rank of Quartermaster 3rd Class, George returned to Rockport and resided there until his death. He was employed for over 25 years by the Seaward Inn and was a longtime member of the VFW and the American Legion.
George is survived by his loving siblings, Sybil Dalton, Christine Goulding, Rita Albright and Raymond Stone. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews who loved spending time in Rockport with "Uncle Georgie." To all his family Rockport and George were synonymous.
He was predeceased by sisters, Jean Butkus, Jackelen Oliveto and Lesley Stone.
George also leaves Valerie Cook and Nicole Kalymeras, the daughter and granddaughter of Annamarie Pavone, George's longtime companion who predeceased George. He will also be missed by many dear friends.
No formal services will be held per George's request, but a gathering to celebrate his life is being planned for September at the American Legion in Rockport.
