Harold's Story

JEFFERSON, NH: Harold E. "Plumb" Reed, 74, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Jefferson, N.H. on the morning of February 10, 2016. Harold was born in Ipswich, June 14, 1941 to Aileen (Wetmore) Reed and Elmer Oscar Reed. Harold attended Rufus Choate Elementary School in Essex, Mass. He graduated from Gloucester High School in Gloucester MA in 1959, where he was active in football and track. He also enjoyed playing clarinet for local bands. He attended Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H. and the University of New Hampshire.

Harold was a building contractor prior to his selection as a New Hampshire Conservation Officer. He began his 17-year career with the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department in 1971. During that time he was a well-known marksman who served as a certified firearms instructor and PR-24 (Baton) instructor. Local police departments sought his expertise in assistance with their firearms programs. He served as a firearms instructor at New Hampshire Police Standards and Training for four years. He also shot competitively around the New England area. He had one of the first K-9’s for the Fish and Game Department. He was a member of the Search and Rescue team and the Dive Team during his career as a Fish and Game Officer in the North Country. He enjoyed competing in the New Hampshire Conservation Officers Field Days in both athletics and marksmanship

Harold was an avid golfer and cross-country skier on trails he built and maintained at his Jefferson residence. He so enjoyed having friends to join him on the trails. He and his family went to Canada often to enjoy their boat on the beautiful Lake Washademoak. He and his wife often traveled to new places in the U.S, Canada and Europe. He was an excellent gardener and took pride in growing his own vegetables.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Judith (Soule) Reed of Jefferson; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Randazza of Peabody; children, Cory Reed of Austin, Texas, Karen Reed of Glendora, Calif., and Eric Reed and his wife, Reena Pathak Reed of Royal Oak MI; sisters Barbara Reed Mulcahy of Georgia, Shirley Reed Boucher and husband J. Thomas Boucher of Easton, N.H., and Marion Reed of Westminster, Calif. His brother Norman Reed predeceased him. Harold enjoyed visits with his five grandchildren, Elizabeth Plett of Fort Collins, Colo., Jeffrey Plett and Brian Plett of Glendora, Calif., Nathan Reed of Austin, Texas, and Gavin Reed of Royal Oak, Mich., and his special nieces and nephews, Nancy Burchett, Joyce Heyer, Pamm Ferrand, David Reed, Pam Nelson, and deceased Joey Boucher.
