ROCKPORT: Helvi H. (Peterson) Olson, 90, wife of the late Arthur Olson, passed away on Saturday afternoon in the Seacoast Nursing Home in Gloucester. Helvi was born in Pigeon, Cove, Rockport, MA on April 10, 1925, the daughter of the late Edward and Hilma Peterson, who both came from Finland by boat. Pigeon Cove was her home for her entire life. She was a graduate of Rockport High School. Helvi was an office manager for Sears in the credit department, and was also employed at the Seaward Inn in Rockport. Once a week she was a volunteer at the Rockport Library office, as well as a member of the St. Paul’s Quilting Group. She was a lifelong member of the Order of the Eastern Star, where she was a past Worthy Matron, and was very involved as a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lanesville. Her Lobster Newberg was a staple and a hit at her Christmas dinners, amongst other dishes, as she was a fabulous cook. She loved her pets, and was never without a companion canine. Her family, Eastern Star, and church were her main interests. Helvi will be lovingly remembered and missed by her family and friends. Helvi is survived by her stepchildren, Linda Cooney, Paula Ouellette both of Gloucester, and Larry Olson of Marion, Mass. and Bonita Springs, Fla.; and son-in-law, Joseph Albee. She had a very special close relationship with granddaughter, Beth Cooney, and is survived by her, as well as grandchildren, Mary Mullahy, Patti Eibber, Joseph Albee Jr., Kathleen Campbell, Heidi DeGraw, Peter Olson; and a special friend, Eva Maki Stanwood of Solon, Maine. She was predeceased by her brothers, Waino, William, and Gunnar Peterson; her stepdaughter, Elizabeth Albee; and daughter-in-law, Penny Olson.
Her funeral service will be held in the St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1123 Washington Street, in Lanesville on Saturday, January 9, 2016, at 11 a.m. Family and friends are cordially invited. The burial will be held privately. There are no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1123 Washington Street, Gloucester, MA 01930.
