Hilma Unterberger, 89, of Lasell Village, Auburndale, Mass., died peacefully on July 5, 2016, after a brief illness. She was the daughter of the late Maurice and Mary Unterberger of Kingston Pa., and the sister of the late Herbert Unterberger, M.D., (Cherie) of Philadelphia. She was a graduate of Bryn Mawr College, where she also obtained a Master’s Degree. After graduation, she dedicated her life to fiercely and tirelessly helping those with addiction and mental health issues, notably as Associate Director of the Cambridge Somerville Mental Health Center, Mass. Dept. of Health; at CASPAR, Cambridge and Somerville Program for Alcoholism Rehabilitation, which she founded with her lifelong friend, the late Lena DiCicco; and as a board member of CASCAP, Inc., which provides affordable housing to the disabled, poor and aged. A licensed psychologist, instructor and author of many studies on alcoholism, intervention, prevention and treatment, Hilma also served on innumerable task forces and boards all designed to improve the lives of those in need.
Hilma was a long-time resident of Cambridge and summer resident of Lanesville, where countless good friends, politics at all levels, the trials and triumphs of the Red Sox and beautiful sunsets viewed from her front deck with an adult beverage (in moderation) enriched her life away from work.
She is survived by her loving nephew, Robert Unterberger and nieces, Susan U. Fine (Bob) and Lisa U. Sattel (Andy) and seven great-nieces and nephews who knew Aunt Hilma was their coolest relative – giving sage advice, inspiring them when describing her Freedom Rides and attending the March on Washington, pushing tirelessly for the Democratic party and teaching everyone not to let the sons of b’s grind them down.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to CASPAR, P.O. Box 45538, Somerville, MA. 02145 or CASCAP, 231 Somerville Ave, Somerville, MA. 02143 or the charity of your choice would be appreciated and, as her final stated wish, a vote for Hillary, too.
A Celebration of Her Life will take place at Lasell Village, Auburndale, on Sunday, September 11, 2016 at 1:30 p.m.
