Howard E.'s Story

Howard E. “Earl” Clayton, 81, husband of Mary (Brien) Clayton of Beverly, formerly of Gloucester, passed away on Monday morning, August 29, 2016, at his residence after a battle with cancer.
He was born in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada, on November 22, 1934, son of the late Howard and Margaret (Garron) Clayton.
Earl worked as a fish cutter at many places along the Gloucester Waterfront including Empire Fish and for the Ciulla Family at Star Fisheries. He was a hard worker and could be found during the summer at either Capt. Bill’s or the Yankee Fleet Whale Watch working as a mate.
He was an avid New England sports fan. He was well liked by his neighbors, old and new.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife of over 40 years, Mary Clayton of Beverly; four sons, Richard Clayton and his wife, Cynthia, Kevin Clayton and his wife, Marie, Jeffrey Clayton, and Nicholas Brien, all of Gloucester; six daughters, Sharon Chianciola and her husband, Walter of Gloucester, Karen Clayton of Kailua Kona, Hawaii, Theresa Delaney and her husband, Mark of New Hampshire, Heidi Clayton-Tarbox and her husband, James of Gloucester, Nicole Anderson and her husband, Glen of Groveland, and Olive O’Connor of Gloucester; 12 grandchildren, Richard Clayton Jr., Christina Clayton, Lauren and Kiley Chianciola, Monica and Ashley Delaney, Kyle Clayton, Isla Anderson, Nathaniel Doherty, Kristen Jones, Frank Brien and Holly O’Connor; 13 great-grandchildren; his sister, Elizabeth Blow and her husband, Ronald of Old Orchard Beach, Maine; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Jack Clayton and his wife, Patricia, and Jim Clayton; a sister, Cora Muise and her husband, Fred; and son-in-law, David O’Connor.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church, Gloucester on Thursday, September 1, at 9:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. The burial will be held in Beechbrook Cemetery, West Gloucester.
Visiting hours in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester, will be held today, Wednesday, from 6 to 8 p.m.
