Isabelle N.'s Story

Text size

Mrs. Isabelle N. (McDonald) Moore, 82, wife of the late Anton (Tony) S. Moore, died the morning of May 9, 2017 at the Golden Living Center in Gloucester, Mass.
She was born in Gloucester on March 9, 1935 to the late Marshall and “Mazie” McDonald.
Isabelle was Valedictorian of the Gloucester High School Class of 1953 and graduated with honors from the Katherine Gibbs School in Boston in 1955.
She and Anton Moore were married in Gloucester on April 21st 1956 and lived in Bremerton, Washington where he served in the Navy. They returned to Gloucester after his being transferred to San Diego, California and raised six red-headed children in Lanesville.
Isabelle was one of the neighborhood moms, active in PTA and attentive to her children's education. She raised funds for the American Cancer Society for annually for years and even extended her generosity by having exchange students stay with her. When her kids were finally all enrolled in school she returned to work as a secretary and bookkeeper for the Chamber of Commerce and The University of Massachusetts Marine Station. She also did the books for Moore Fisheries which she owned with her husband Tony.
Isabelle was a voracious reader and intellect who loved theater, art and music or, anything from Peter, Paul and Mary to Pavarotti. She was a quick wit, had an easy smile and loved people from all walks of life. She was a generous hostess and embraced the cultural diversity of the people she met often inviting them to dinner, providing a place to stay, or a holiday to share. She opened her home to the neighborhood kids, made up projects such as polishing silver just to be able to throw a few dollars in their pockets.
A gifted letter writer, Isabelle had a Japanese pen pal, Kenji Takaku, with whom she corresponded most of her life. After years of penny saving, she bravely made the trip of a lifetime to Japan in 1978. Traveling solo, she stayed with Kenji and his mostly Japanese speaking family. She also traveled to visit her kids out of state as often as she could. Although keeping up with family and holidays can be hard, she still managed to spend time with her adored sister Claire.
Isabelle’s husband, Tony Moore passed away at just 57 years of age this was difficult for her but, years later she found a second love and partner in Tom Bagshaw. Both, with dry wit, they chose April Fool’s Day as their wedding day and renamed “Two Old Fool’s Day!” They had many happy years together and lots of laughter.
Every spring, we will be reminded of the wonderful person you were, with the blooming of the forsythia and lilacs, you enjoyed so much! Forever in our hearts, we love you and know you are at peace.
The Moore family, wishes to extend their gratitude to all the caregivers and staff at Golden Living Center and All Care Hospice. Their kindness, hard work and compassion was ever present through Isabelle's care.
