James's Story

Mr. James E. Ball, 88, of Gloucester, passed away on Tuesday evening August 8, 2017 at home with his family at his side following a lengthy illness. He was the loving husband to Mildred (Rocha) Ball with whom he shared 51 years of marriage.

Jim was born September 6, 1928 in Boston. He was the son of the late George S. and Mary (McAtamney) Ball. Jim was a lifelong resident of both Essex and Gloucester and attended both Essex and Gloucester.
He was a United States Army veteran served during the Korean War.
Jim was a mechanic, he repaired machines for Mighty Mac for over 30 years until his retirement. After retiring he worked for Axcelis in the Building Maintenance Department.
He was a member of the Holy Name Society at Our Lady of Good Voyage Church and also enjoyed baking sweet bread at the Church. He was a long time member of the Fraternity Club, a former member of the Gloucester Elks Lodge 892. He tinkered with cars, did some carpentry work around the house. His true enjoyment came from the time he spent with his family. Jim took great pride, joy and love in raising his grandson, Steven Militello.
In addition to Mildred, Jim is survived by his step children David L. Lane and his wife, Kathy of Gloucester, Scott Lane and his wife, Susan of Rockport, Sharon A. Militello of Gloucester and Gary P. Lane of Gloucester; his sister Patricia Fitzgerald of Essex; his 12 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his two brothers, George and Roger Ball.
Jim’s Memorial Mass will be celebrated in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church, 142 Prospect St. Gloucester, on Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Our Lady of Good Voyage Church, 74 Pleasant St. Gloucester, MA 01930.
