James P.'s Story
James Peter Movalli, age 72, beloved educator and civic volunteer, passed away on Friday, June 17, 2016, following a brief but valiant struggle with a very aggressive form of cancer.
‘Jim’ was the youngest of the six sons of Edith (Pucci) Movalli and Arthur Movalli. Born in Gloucester, he was a 1963 graduate of Gloucester High School. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Iowa Wesleyan College while residing with his aunt and uncle, Drs. Phillip and Mary (Pucci) Couchman, as an integral part of the family. He earned his master's degree in education from Salem State College.
Throughout his 30 years of teaching, he helped shape the lives of generations of Gloucester youngsters. He was the rare man in elementary education when he began his career. His six-foot, seven-inch frame housed an amazingly kind, patient, and benevolent soul. His former students from Maplewood School or West Parish would spot him years later and greet him warmly, “Hi, Mr. Mo!”
Jim served his city as a member of the Zoning Board for over three decades. He was an active parishioner of Our Lady of Good Voyage. He was also a member of the Elks. During his retirement, he enjoyed traveling, swimming and walking for exercise.
Family meant a great deal to Jim. He is survived by his beloved son, Joshua Movalli; daughter-in-law, Suely; and grandson, Jason. Other family members include his brothers, Arthur and companion, Kay, Richard and wife, Joanne, Robert and companion, Dorothy, John and companion, Sharon, and David and wife, Virginia. Jim shared many happy recent years with his dear fiance, Sarah Deacon.
His funeral will be held from the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester, on Wednesday, June 22, at 8:45 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church at 9:30 a.m. Extended family and friends are cordially invited to attend.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday from 3 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
The burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery.
Contributions may be made in his name to The Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation or Cape Ann Animal Aid.
