John E.'s Story
John E. Parrelli, RDO, FCLSA, NCLE-AC, of Beverly, Mass., passed away unexpectedly Saturday, December 17, 2016, at the Mt. Auburn Hospital in Cambridge. He was the husband of Karen M. (Bouchard) Parrelli. He was the beloved son of the late Benjamin F. and Helen (Saponaro) Parrelli.
An honorably discharged veteran, he served his country as a corporal of the United States Marine Corps.
John Parrelli’s interest in optics began at the early age of 14, apprenticing in Salem, Mass., with a guild optician. He advanced his optical career by training in the fitting of rigid gas permeable contact lenses with Bella Biskei in an advanced contact lens program held at the Optical Institute of New England. Later, he furthered his studies pursuing soft lens education at Newbury College’s Ophthalmic Optics program.
Mr. Parrelli was founder of Parrelli Optical since its inception in 1968. He was a senior board member and Contact Lens Education Chair for the past 10 years to the Opticians Association of Massachusetts, an advisor to the Benjamin Franklin Institute Optical program in Boston, where he served as a contact lens faculty member and externship preceptor. He was honored in 2014 as the Massachusetts Optician of the Year. That same year he received the national award for Contact Lens Society of America member of the year.
In addition to his wife, Karen, with whom he shared over 48 years of marriage, he leaves behind two sons, Joel Parrelli of Seattle, Wash., Jonathan Parrelli and his wife, Adrienne of Beverly; a daughter, Andrea Martinonis and her husband, Vasaris of Navarre, Fla.; a brother, Benjamin Parrelli, Sr. and his wife, Elizabeth of Wyoming; a sister, Annice Weinraub and her husband, Melvin of Somers, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Ariana, Lia and Gabriella; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, dear friends and patients.
Visiting hours will be held Tuesday, December 20, 2016, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly, Mass.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, 253 Cabot St., Beverly on Wednesday, December 21, at 1 p.m. All relatives and friends are invited to attend. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Beverly.
Contributions may be made in his memory to the John E. Parrelli Educational Fund, P.O. Box 344, Danvers, MA 01923 to help apprentice and advance young opticians in Massachusetts.
