John M.'s Story
Mr. John M. Bishop, 88, of Manchester-by-the-Sea, passed away Sunday morning in Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation after a brief illness. He was the loving husband to the late Barbara L. (Landergren) Bishop, with whom she shared 62 years of marriage.
John was born August 7, 1928, in Gloucester. He was the son of the late Ernest C. and Helen L. (Fisher) Bishop. A resident of Manchester-by-the-Sea for the past 50 years and previously resided in Gloucester.
He was a United States Army veteran and served during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged on October 17, 1952, and held the rank of Corporal.
John was an avid golfer. He was a member of the Vittori Rocci Post, American Legion Post 113 Manchester. He also was a member and past treasurer of the Manchester Club.
John worked at Cape Ann Bank and Trust from 1956 to 1974. In 1974 he went to work for the Cape Ann Savings Bank and retired in 1991 as vice president of the bank.
He is survived by her three children, Wendy L. Bishop, Jay M. Bishop and his wife, Diana and Jeffrey A. Bishop, all of Manchester-by-the-Sea; his two grandchildren, Jennifer L. and Christopher P. Bishop; his brother, Frederick Bishop and his wife, Joan of Gloucester. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Ernest Bishop II, William Bishop and Rebecca Milano.
John’s memorial service will be in the Pike-Newhall Funeral Home, 61 Middle St., Gloucester on Friday, May 19, 2017, at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
