Kenneth Hohensee, 94, passed away peacefully in hospice on Sunday, December 4, 2016, after a brief illness.
He was a devoted and loving son, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Ken was born on January 5, 1922, and grew up in Torrington, Conn., where he was valedictorian of his high school graduating class. He obtained his machinist license and went on to earn his accounting certification from the Bentley School of Accounting in Boston. He served as an ordnance specialist with the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II in Europe, stationed in Liège, Belgium. After the war, like so many of his fellow veterans, Ken attended the University of Connecticut on the GI Bill. Upon graduating, he married Gerda Hoffmann and settled down with his family in Milford, Conn. Ken also earned an MBA from the University of New Haven in 1976. After retiring from a decades-long career as an Industrial Engineer with Armstrong Rubber Company (now Pirelli), Ken was employed by U.S. Surgical Steel for seven more years before he retired again. Following his divorce, he met and later married Ruth Litke in November 1992 and lived in Rockport, until August 2016, when he moved to Derry, N.H.
Ken enjoyed every aspect of life, especially the outdoors, and was a natural athlete, excelling in hockey, baseball, skiing, tennis, golf, bicycling, hiking and more. He also loved reading, history, science, and travel, and during his retirement visited such far-flung places as China, Japan, Europe, Turkey, and the Middle East, including cruises to Alaska, the Caribbean, and the Panama Canal. In his later years, Ken loved his daily walks all around Rockport, and especially enjoyed the ocean breezes and panoramic views at Halibut Point State Park.
He was preceded in death by parents, Paul O. and Olga A. Hohensee; sister, Evelyn R. Houghtaling and husband, Arthur and aunt, Katherine C. Hohensee, all of Torrington, Conn.; and second wife, Ruth F. Litke Hohensee of Rockport, Mass. He leaves behind three children, Paul H. Hohensee and wife, Doris of Nashua, N.H., Louise H. Valdov and husband, Juri of Round Hill, Va., and Joanne R. Luce and husband, Randy of Woodbridge, Va.; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three stepchildren, Fern Taylor, Caroline Fitzpatrick and husband, Rich and Paul Bredice, all of Rockport, Mass.
Ken's funeral will be held (please note date change) on Tuesday, December 20, 2016, at 11 a.m. at the chapel at Hillside Cemetery, 76 Walnut St., Torrington, CT. Burial with full military honors will follow. Gleeson-Ryan Funeral Home, 258 Prospect St., Torrington is in care of arrangements.
