Margaret E."Peg"'s Story
Margaret E. “Peg” Degnan, 84, of Gloucester, passed away on Thursday, October 13, 2016, in the Golden Living Center in Gloucester.
She was born in Gloucester on May 11, 1932, the daughter of the late Edward Stephen and Margaret Frances (Cummings) Degnan. Peg grew up in Gloucester and lived here all of her life. She graduated Gloucester High School and attended Burdett College in Lynn. She worked as a head administrative assistant for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts’ Mental Health Department. Peg was involved in the Elks Emblem Club and had been a past president five times, the Gloucester Women’s Club, and she belonged to the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary since 1957. She enjoyed reading Molly Murphy mysteries and enjoyed working on numerous knitting projects. Peg had a mind like a steel trap. She could pull up memories and facts from years ago and even give you dates. Her family and her many friends will miss her. She is survived by her brothers, John E. Degnan, Francis P. Degnan and his wife Mary, all of Gloucester; a niece, Cathy Malin and her husband Frank, of Old Saybrook, Conn. and a nephew, Andrew Patrick Degnan of Gloucester. She also had 2 grandnephews, Patrick and Christopher Malin.
Her visiting hours will be held on Monday, Oct. 17 from 4-7 p.m. in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington St., Gloucester. Family and friends are cordially invited. Her funeral will be held from the Greely Funeral Home on Tuesday at 10:45 a.m. followed by a Mass celebrated in St. Ann’s Church, Holy Family Parish, Gloucester, at 11:30 a.m. Her burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery, Gloucester.
