Mary Lou's Story

Mary Lou Toye, 63, of Lake Park, Fla., formerly of Gloucester, passed away suddenly on Sunday, June 18, 2017, at the Mass General Hospital in Boston.
She was born in Providence, R.I. on June 16, 1954, daughter of Charles A. Toye Sr. and the late Marie C. (Bruce) Toye.
Mary Lou was a graduate of Gloucester High School, Class of 1972.
She was employed as an executive secretary for the Lake Park Elementary School, where she also volunteered as a mentor. Mary Lou enjoyed walking, bike riding, gardening, and going to the beach. She just loved the outdoors. Every day she would watch church on TV and say the rosary. She also volunteered and was a Eucharistic Minister at the St. Francis of Assisi Church in Riviera Beach, Fla.
Mary Lou survived with ALS for seven years. She was extremely positive, courageous, and very inspiring to all. She fought it with dignity and strength through prayer.
She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her children, Felicia E. Colon and Pedro Ryan Colon, both of Lake Park, Fla.; her father, Charles A. Toye Sr. of Gloucester; brothers, Charles A. Toye Jr. and his wife, Maripat of Longmeadow, Mass., Jeffrey B. Toye and his wife, Dawn of Gloucester; sister, Kathy McDiarmid and her husband, Bo of Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass.; her granddog, Roxy; her nephews and nieces, Charles Toye III and his wife, Trish and their three children of Sherborn, Mass., James E. Toye of Atlantic Beach, Fla., Katie Delehanty and her husband, Jack and their two children of Portsmouth, R.I., Jonathan McDiarmid and his wife, Meg and their two children of Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass., Alyssa McDiarmid and her fiancé, Greg Finn of Natick, Mass., Jared Toye and Alicia Toye, both of Gloucester; her godfather, Herman Bruce and his wife, Betty Ann of N. Dartmouth, Mass.
Her funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Ann’s Church, Holy Family Parish on Saturday, June 24, at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend.
Visiting hours in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington St., Gloucester, will be held on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. The burial will be held privately at a later date.
