Matthew Robert McGuire (Mickey) died in Sacramento, Calif., on July 20, 2016. He was born on January 29, 1924, in Gloucester, Mass. Mickey was the beloved husband of Marilyn, and father of Michael, Patrick (Kathryn), Timothy (Cindy), Marilyn, Kevin (Shum), Mary (Richard), and Megan (Jeremy). He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. In addition, he is survived by two sisters, Ruth Ann and Patricia. Mickey was preceded in death by his loving wife, Marilyn; his mother, Marion; his father, Henry Patrick; and his sisters, Marion and Barbara. He graduated from Gloucester High School in 1942, and entered the military on February 7, 1943. Mickey was shot down during a bombing raid over Germany on March 23, 1944. He was interned as a Prisoner of War in Stalag Luft 1 (Barth, Germany) until he was liberated by the Russians on May 7, 1945, and he returned to American control on May 15, 1945. Mickey married Marilyn on April 13, 1946. A year later, he went back into the military and spent a total of 22 years on active duty. After his retirement, he served another 20 years with the Department of Defense. He earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Sacramento State University, Sacramento, and a Master’s Degree in Logistics from the Air Force Air University. Mickey was a member of both the American Legion and the American Ex-Prisoners of War.
Lombard & Company is providing the funeral arrangements. Mickey will be laid to rest with full military honors at the National Cemetery in Dixon and will be interred with his wife, Marilyn. Friends are encouraged to inquire with family regarding the details of the ceremony at Dixon as well as the celebration to follow.
