Text size

Following a 16 year battle with cancer, Nancy E. Porter died peacefully on November 8, 2016, at Dana Farber/Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Mass. She was 76 years old and the wife of Gardner W. Porter, Jr. for 53 years.
A lifelong resident of Gloucester, Mass., Nancy was born on March 10, 1940, to the late Charles E. Rowe and Lillian Mattson Rowe. She attended Gloucester Public Schools, graduating in 1958 and received a Bachelors Degree in Teaching in 1962 from Salem State University. She taught in the town of Essex for four years, prior to having children. She then spent a rewarding 23 years at Cape Ann Pediatrics as an Administrative Assistant. She thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the children of Cape Ann, many of whom would say hello to Nancy when recognized in public.
She was married to Gardner “Duke” on June 27, 1963, in Gloucester, Mass. Together they enjoyed 53 years and were proud to become parents of two sons and grandparents of four children. In her youth, Nancy enjoyed tennis, cross country skiing, and seasonal camping with her family in New Hampshire. Recently, she was happiest surrounding herself with her grandchildren.
Nancy is survived in marriage by her husband, Duke; son, Gary and his wife, Mary of Rockport, Mass.; and son, Brian and his wife, Lori of Andover, Mass. Her grandchildren, Benjamin, Colin, Elise and Gardner, will miss her very much. She was predeceased by her parents and brother, Norman “Bud” Rowe of Rockport, Mass.
Respectfully, services will be private and held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 1123 Washington Street, Gloucester, MA 01930 and Dana Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284-9168.
