Patricia's Story

GLOUCESTER: Patricia Ann Martin (Rucker), 52, died unexpectedly at her home on Tuesday, December 8, 2015. Born in Bryn Mawr, Pa. on October 3, 1963, she was the daughter of Ken Clay and Eleanor Clay (O’Brien) and was a 1981 graduate of Marple-Newtown Senior High School. She was also a graduate of the ACTION Medical Assistant degree program.

Patty held various jobs in her life, most recently as a Medical Assistant at Cape Ann Pediatrics where she loved caring for the many children who came to the practice. She enjoyed her work but none more than her role of wife and mother. Her family was the most important thing in her life and she could be found cheering her children on at various sporting events over the years.

Patty spent many years as a Sunday school teacher at both St. Peter’s and St. Ann’s churches and was very devoted to her Catholic faith. She was an incredible, beautiful woman with an amazing, compassionate heart. Her love for her family and friends was only matched by her larger-than-life personality. She had an infectious laugh and her fun-loving nature could not help but put a smile on the face of friends and strangers alike.

An avid reader and beach lover, Patty could be found nearly every day after work in the summer at Niles beach with a book pausing for a few dips in the ocean between chapters. When her children were young, she was a daily regular at the creek at Good Harbor Beach. She also spent time with her family at Lake Winnipesaukee. She loved nature and all living things and was a frequent visitor to Cape Ann Animal Shelter to visit the dogs and cats and see the new arrivals.

Patty is loved by so many and will be missed beyond belief. The number of lives that she has touched is a legacy that will live well beyond her all-too-short life.

She was predeceased by her parents and survived by her husband, Jeffrey Martin; her four children, April, Robert, Drew and Ellie Martin, all of Gloucester; her sister, Eleanore McGlinn; nephew, John Ryan and niece, Maura McGlinn of Media, Pa. and many close friends and extended family.

Her funeral Mass will be held on Monday, December 14, at 11 a.m. in St. Ann’s Church. Extended family and friends are cordially invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to the Cape Ann Animal Aid Association, 4 Paws Lane, Gloucester, MA 01930. For online condolences, please visit greelyfuneralhome.com.
