Rev. James J.'s Story

Rev. James J. Harrington, 88, retired Senior Priest and former pastor of Sacred Heart Church, Manchester by the Sea, entered into eternal life on Friday, September 16, 2016.
Born in Dorchester, son of the late Michael J. and Catherine E. Harrington, he was raised and educated in Arlington and graduated from Arlington High School, Class of 1945. He continued his education, earning his Bachelor’s Degree from Boston College. Fr. Harrington completed his seminary studies at St. John’s Seminary in Brighton and was ordained to the priesthood by Cardinal Cushing at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross on September 29, 1953.
Fr. Harrington’s first assignment was as an assistant pastor at Infant Jesus Parish in Brookline where he served until 1956. He was then assigned to St. Michael Parish in Lowell until 1963, and then St. Mary Parish in Lynn as an assistant pastor.
In 1965, his priestly assignment took a different turn from parish ministry when he was named to the faculty of Cardinal Cushing Academy in West Newbury, Mass. From 1967 to 1972 he served as headmaster of the Archdiocesan-sponsored country day school for boys in the Merrimack Valley.
On completion of his assignment at the Academy, he was named associate pastor of St. Theresa of Avila Parish in West Roxbury. In April of 1974, he was named pastor of St. Anthony Parish in Allston. In July of 1982, Fr. Harrington was named pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Manchester by the Sea until his retirement on October 27, 2003.
He is survived by three sisters, Catherine Hallinan of Arlington, Helen Nugent of Lynnfield, and Ann Kelley of Tewksbury; his longtime dear friend, Supat of Manchester by the Sea. He was the uncle of Catherine Stewart, William Rudder, John Rudder, Laurie Keating, Katherine Harrington, Jacqueline O'Sullivan, Linda Chadwick, Michael Hallinan, Katherine Yow, Mary Fairbairn, Ann Donahue, James Nugent, Patricia Hulse, Thomas Nugent M.D, Lianne Higgins, Kathleen Kelley-Barer, Daniel Kelley, Nancy Moulton, Kevin Kelley, Christine Harte and Sheila Kelley. He is further survived by several grand-nieces and grand-nephews and his devoted dog, Molly. He was also the brother of the late Mary Rudder and John Harrington, and uncle of the late Eileen Kelley and James Kelley.
A Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Church, 62 School St., Manchester by the Sea, Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2016, at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. He will lie in state at the church on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. Private burial will follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Arlington. Arrangements by the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly.
