Rita's Story

Rita (Turner) Mason, 83, longtime resident of Gloucester, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Tuesday, May 17, 2016. Born December 29, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Delia Turner. Rita was born in Rockport and graduated from St. Ann’s School with the Class of 1950, Essex Aggie Technical School with the Class of 1969, Northshore Community College with the Class of 1979, and Boston University School of Nursing with the degree of Bachelor of Science with the Class of 1987. She was a devoted and loving wife to the late Arnold F. Mason of Gloucester. Rita worked as a nurse, which was a career she was passionate and extremely proud of. Rita had a strong belief in her faith. She loved her family deeply and always looked forward to family events. Rita had a great appreciation of the value of education and when you spoke to her she would always encourage you to further yourself, whether it was continuing your education or learning new skills at your own career. Her hobbies included watching game shows, reading, and knitting and spending quality time with her loved ones, regardless if you shared the same bloodline. She was the cherished mother of Carlo Mason and his wife, Sharen, Robert Mason and his late wife, Sandra and loving companion Donna, Robin Babine and her husband, Barry, Mary Poole, Gayle Sawyer and her husband, Scott. She was the proud grandmother of Emily Mahoney, Errin Ferreira, Erika Lane, to the late Elizabeth Sawyer, Donna Adams, Colette Falzano, Scott Sawyer, Jr., William Sawyer, Rebecca Girard, Jonathan Babine, Edwin Searle; loving sister, of Delaine Fitzgerald, the late Roy Turner; and the sister of Janice Turner and Mary Turner. She is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visiting hours in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington St., Gloucester, will be held on Thursday, May 19, 2016, from 4 to 8 p.m. Family and friends are cordially invited. There will be a service in the funeral home on Friday, May 20, 2016, at 11:30 a.m. Her burial will take place in Beechbrook Cemetery, West Gloucester, MA.
