Sarah S.'s Story
Sarah Shillington Stone, 77, of Exeter, N.H., and Monhegan Island, Maine, passed away Thursday, December 8, 2016, at her home in Exeter. She was a knitter, weaver, pianist, harpist and avid reader, and was best known for her quiet strength, kindness, patience and gentility.
She was born in St. Louis, Mo., the daughter of John J. and Matilda Shillington. She graduated from Webster Groves High School, attended Wells College in New York, and received her bachelor’s degree from Washington University in St. Louis. Her varied work life included secretarial work, property renovation and management, and artist management for her late husband, Don Stone. She was also predeceased by her brother, William R. Shillington of Yarmouth, Maine. She is survived by her brother, John J. Shillington, Jr. and wife, Jacqueline of St. Louis, Mo.; two daughters, Katherine Guffey and husband, James Sauvé of Sedona, Ariz., and Elizabeth Guffey of Pownal, Maine; four step-children, Sandra Akers of Rockport, Mass., Pamela Stone and husband, Steve Congdon of Essex, Mass., Philip Stone and wife, Annie of Moody, Maine, and Caleb Stone and wife, Lis of Rockport, Mass.; her granddaughter, Bethany Sauvé; and nine step-grandchildren, Michael and Marabah Akers, Nicholas and Devin Congdon, Trevor, Natalie and Carter Stone, and Jacob and Isaac Stone; and her beloved cat, Norton.
A memorial service will be held on Monhegan Island at a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the New Hampshire SPCA in Stratham, N.H., or the Monhegan Memorial Library.
