Victor E.'s Story
Victor E. Maffei, 80, of Gloucester, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2017.
He was born on January 27, 1937, in Sannicandro di Bari, Italy and moved to New York in 1950. In 1959, he joined the U.S. Army as part of the Signal Corps. Soon after he joined the Foreign Service through the Department of State working as a Communications Officer. He served in numerous diplomatic posts including Benghazi, Libya (where he met his future wife, Harriet), Brussels, Belgium, Rome, Italy, Canberra, Australia and Rabat, Morocco. While serving in Stuttgart, Germany he married Harriet in 1966. He retired in 1991 in Gloucester.
Victor was predeceased by his wife, Harriet (Lovett) and his brother, Rocco Maffei. He is survived by his daughter, Francesca and her husband, Scott and two grandchildren, Simon and Samantha of Stratham, N.H. He is also survived by his brothers, Franco Maffei, Vito Maffei, Giuseppe Maffei and Cosmo Maffei; and sisters, Filomena Desposati and Antonietta Blanco; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many devoted friends.
Visiting hours will be held in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester on Sunday, August 20, from 5 to 8 p.m. His funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Ann’s Church, Holy Family Parish, 72 Pleasant Street, Gloucester, on Monday at 10:30 a.m. with a luncheon to follow at a nearby location. Burial services will be private.
