Vita (Manzella)'s Story
Vita Vitale, age 87, of Gloucester, Mass., passed away on Wednesday, January 18, 2017, at Addison Gilbert Hospital in Gloucester surrounded by her family.
She was born in Trappeto, Sicily on June 18, 1929, daughter of the late Maria Antonia Manzella and Giuseppe Manzella. In 1957, Vita met Pietro Vitale from Balestrate, Sicily and was married shortly after. Pietro was the love of her life and they both, alongside their daughter, Maria, worked hard on their family farm in Balestrate, Sicily. Following the death of her husband in April of 1978, Vita and her daughter, Maria moved to the United States (Gloucester, Mass.) to be with her sister, Caterina Militello. Both Vita and Maria began working at Gorton’s on February 20, 1979. At Gorton’s, Vita was known by all as an extremely caring and thoughtful woman who, alongside her daughter, worked very hard. In October 1992, Vita retired from Gorton’s to take care of her two grandchildren, Shawn and Robert Lowe of Gloucester.
Vita was known by many as one who enjoyed the simpler things in life including cooking, watching the Food Network, as well as supporting her New England sports teams.
She was the beloved mother of Maria and loving mother-in-law to Rick Lowe; loving grandmother of Danielle Nigro, Shawn Lowe and wife, Josephine Lowe, and Robert Lowe. She is also survived by her three sisters, Vincenza, Caterina, Maria; and brother, Pino; as well as her two great-grandchildren, Cameron and Chloe Nigro; cousins, nieces and nephews; and many good friends.
