Wilbur F.'s Story
Mr. Wilbur F. “Bill, Willie” Michon, 91, of Gloucester passed away on Wednesday, August 8, 2017 in the E.N. Rogers Veterans Hospital Bedford following a lengthy illness. He was the loving husband to Charlotte J. (Bradley) Michon with whom he shared 62 years of marriage.
Willie was born January 16, 1926 in Ipswich. He is the son of the late Jozef and Bronislawa “Blanche” V. (Krzmieska) Michon. He was a resident of Gloucester for most of his life. He grew up in Ipswich and graduated from Ipswich High School, Class of 1944.
He was a WW II United States Navy veteran. He held the rank of Gunner’s Mate Second Class. He served on the USS Baker DE as well and the USS Duncan DD. He was stationed in Europe, China and Japan. In 1947 he reenlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in Fort Bliss, Texas as an aircraft artillery instructor and later was medically retired from Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver, Colo.
Willie worked at Bank of New England as a supply clerk and courier for many years until his retirement in 1990. He previously worked for the Gloucester Bank and Trust. He also worked as a bartender at the Kosciusko Club and Captain Courageous.
He was a member of the former Sacred Heart Church in Gloucester, the Kosciusko Club in Ipswich where he met Charlotte, the Gloucester Elks Lodge 892 and Vittori-Rocci Post #56 in Beverly. He most recently was a communicant at Our Lady of Good Voyage Church. He was a dedicated loyal Red Sox fan. In his retirement he enjoyed working in his garden and especially liked growing beautiful tomatoes.
In addition to his loving wife, Charlotte, Willie is survived by his devoted daughter, Judith Doberman of Gloucester, his devoted granddaughter, Shaina Doberman of Gloucester as well as many nieces, nephews and his cherished little buddy Charlie Brown, his cat.
He was the father of the late Frank Michon and Kenneth P. Michon, grandfather of the late Michael Michon, brother of the late Augusta J. Michon, Margaret Dudley, Mary Driscoll, Mildred Putur, John Michon, Avid Michon and Stanley Michon.
The family would like to thank all the staff in 4 C at the Edith N. Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford for all the support, love and care shown to Willie.
Willie Funeral Service will be in the Pike-Newhall Funeral Home, 61 Middle St., Gloucester, on Monday, August 14, 2017 at 11 a.m. There will be a time of visitation just prior to the Service beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Beechbrook Cemetery.
