Gloucester - Alfonso Millefoglie of Gloucester, dedicated husband of Antonia Favazza Millefoglie left this world on October 1st 2019 embraced by his loving family at Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Alfonso left his hometown of Terrasini Sicily at the age of 19 and made a new home with his family in Gloucester's Old Fort. At this young age, he entered the life of a fisherman where he fished on the Nancy & Maria with his father Filippo and brother Antonino (Nino). At the age of 23, he married his childhood sweetheart, Antonia and later raised his two children Alphonse and Maria with gentleness and love. Recognized for his mechanical skills and strong work ethic, Alfonso purchased and captained several of the largest eastern draggers in the Gloucester fleet such as the fishing vessel "Little Al" and the fishing vessel "Maria and Al". As a fisherman, he lived a rugged and treacherous life at sea without complaint. Alfonso was an active member of the St. Peter's Club and served for many years as a committee member for the St. Peter's Fiesta. He was a dedicated Catholic and never missed a St. Joseph's Novena at the Groppo's residence. Upon retirement, Alfonso turned his talents into crafting world-class boat models that received prestigious awards. His son Al was his supporter and champion throughout his creations. Alfonso and Antonia also enjoyed spending their winters with dear friends in Cape Canaveral, Florida. Alfonso's talents were also evident in his garden, where he produced numerous varieties of tomatoes, eggplants, and zucchini that he shared with all of his friends and family. He also took pride in his 'handy-man' skills that included plumbing, carpentry, tiling, and electrical work for anyone that needed it. Alfonso was immediately loved by all who met him and he will be most remembered for his kindness and unassuming manner. Alfonso's only boasting was when he shared the fine qualities and accomplishments of his dedicated grandsons, Alfonzo, Maximo, and Collin. Our family has lost a loving father, husband, and grandfather while the community has lost one of its 'finest kind.'
Alfonso was predeceased by his parents, Ninfa Bologna and Filippo Millefoglie and his brothers, Antonino and Giacomo Millefoglie. He is survived by his son, Alphonse and daughter-in-law, Nancy; his daughter, Maria and son-in-law Bill Huston; three grandsons, Alfonzo, Maximo, and Collin; his step grandsons, Justin and Saer Huston, and step great-grandsons, Keller and Riley Huston along with many friends and relatives both in Sicily and throughout the United States.
Our family would like to thank Café Sicilia and his friends there for always reserving his seat at the front table, the relatives who supported him, his caring nurses John and Tina, and Margaret, his 'Sicilian' social worker who supported our family at the end of his journey.
His funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Ann's Church on Saturday, October 5th at 10 a.m. followed by a burial in Calvary Cemetery. A visitation will be held prior to the Mass in St. Ann's Church from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to Catholic Charities, 280 Washington Street, Salem, MA 01970 or St. Ann's Church, Holy Family Parish, 60 Prospect Street, Gloucester, MA 01930.

Maria I'm so glad I got to meet you and Alfonso on my first trip to Gloucester 3 summers ago. I've seen pictures of you both with my parents in their photo albums and was excited to finally meet you and other family members for the first time. I just wish I would have made that trip much sooner and had more time to get to know you both. My condolences and prayers go out to you, your family and all your loved ones. God Bless
