Charles Michael Cataldo Obituary
Essex - Charles Michael Cataldo, 75 of Essex. died on Sunday, May 10th.
Born in Trenton, NJ, on July 13, 1950, he was the son of the late Michael J. Cataldo and Eleanor (Shearer) Cataldo and beloved husband to Vickie (Harmatiuk) Cataldo.
Michael will be remembered as a deeply committed member of the Essex community, someone who took quiet pride in showing up for others. Through his work in town government, he dedicated himself to the well-being of his neighbors, always ready to lend a hand or offer guidance. He had a gift for bringing people together and made meaningful use of the relationships he built throughout his life, often connecting others with opportunities, support, or simply a kind word when it was needed most.
After graduating from Boston College in 1972, he worked with his father on Long Island, NY. He moved back to Boston in 1974, and worked for the City of Boston under Mayor Kevin White and received his Master's Degree from Boston University. After Mayor White retired, he worked for Massport for 30+ years at Logan Airport in Boston, where he formed lasting friendships and carried the same spirit of generosity and dependability that defined him. He was an active member of the hospitality group Skal, serving on the board for many years and several as treasurer. He represented Logan Airport & Massport in conjunction with the Convention and Visitors Bureau in many trade shows throughout the country and overseas.
Outside of his professional life, he found joy in the simple, grounding pleasures of nature. He devoted countless hours to caring for his wooded property, building gardens, and creating a space that reflected his patience and creativity. He was a member of the Essex Lions and helped that organization with fundraising and special events.
Music was a constant companion, with the Grateful Dead holding a special place in his heart. He also had a deep love for dogs, especially his beloved Newfoundlands, who were a central part of his life and brought him immense happiness. Above all, he will be remembered for his kindness, his steady presence, and the many ways he quietly made life better for those around him.
Michael is survived by his wife, Vickie Cataldo of Essex, his children; Alyssa Miller and her husband, Julian of Essex, and Andrew Cataldo and his wife, Liz, of Biddeford, ME, as well as his granddaughters, Cedella and Mae Miller. Charles also leaves his brothers; Jeff Cataldo and his wife, Nancy, and Stephen Cataldo and his wife, Stephanie, and his sisters; Christine Curtis, Lynn Vanderjayt and her husband, Brett, and Beth Cataldo. He is also survived by his cousins, Phyllis and Joe Mueller as well as many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, June 11th at 4 p.m. at the barn at Castle Hill, 290 Argilla Road, Ipswich. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
