Gloucester - Gloucester - On June 10th, Dale H. McCalla, 78, of Gloucester, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family.

Born in Lakewood, OH he was the son to the late Herbert and Margaret (Paterson) McCalla and he was the beloved husband of 57 years to Suzanne (Fuchs) McCalla.

Dale was always an outdoorsman. As a child, he and his father vacationed in Michigan at a cabin they built. They enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking and boating on Lake Superior.

Dale attended elementary school in Lakewood, Ohio and graduated from Lakewood High School. He was a member of the track team and played trumpet in the high school's band. As a young man, he had the amazing opportunity to play his trumpet alongside Louis Armstrong. Dale went on to attend Baldwin Wallace College in Berea, Ohio where he was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He had a double major in music and business management. He graduated Baldwin Wallace with a bachelor's degree.

Dale met the love of life, Suzanne, in California while she was on vacation and he was working part time as a chauffeur. The two kept in touch and he eventually followed her back to the East Coast. He worked at First National Bank of Ipswich now, Brookline Bank. Dale started as a branch manager and then after 35 years, he retired as a senior vice president. After his retirement from the bank, Dale worked part-time for 17 years at Maestranzi Brothers in Beverly in the billing department. No matter what position he held, he truly enjoyed being able to help people and interact with people.

Throughout his life, Dale enjoyed the outdoors and being active in the community. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, he was in several bowling leagues, and he was a pitcher in a fast pitch softball league.

Dale and Suzanne bought their first home in Manchester where they lived for 30 years. Dale served as a member on the Manchester Housing Authority board, he sang in the Manchester Singers Choir and in the Sacred Heart Church choir. He was also a member of the Essex Lions Club. When his children were young, he was involved helping to coach soccer, softball, and Little League.

In 2000, they moved to Gloucester and became very active in the Holy Family Parish.

Dale is survived by his wife Suzanne McCalla of Gloucester; daughter Amy Clancy and her partner, Michael Simpson of Gloucester; four grandchildren, Nicholas Paige of Gloucester, Benjamin Paige and his wife Megan of Maine, Aiden and Ethan Phejarasai of Malden and their mother Annie; two great-grandchildren, Evelyn and Russell Paige.

In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his son, Adam McCalla and sister Judy Zehe.

His funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Ann's Church (Holy Family Parish), 74 Pleasant Street, Gloucester on Friday, June 20th at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Burial will be at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Manchester by-the-sea.
