Gloucester - David J Harrison, Sr., 81 of Gloucester, passed away on Monday December 1st after a courageous battle with Hodgkins Lymphoma.
Born in Salem on January 8,1944 to the late William J. Harrison Sr. and Marie (Michaud) Demirs. He graduated from Salem High School with the class of 1963. For over 25 years he was well known around town, as the friendly man who drove the CATA bus around Cape Ann. Previously David spent years working at John Hancock as an insurance agent and was the founder and owner of Dave's Variety where he worked alongside his family.
David was an avid candlepin bowler and bowled in the Variety League at Cape Ann Lanes for more than 30 years, where he still holds many league records. Golf was David's real passion in life. He was a well-respected member of Rockport Golf Club for over 40 years and could be found, countless days golfing with his family and friends. David won many tournaments and awards at Rockport, and recorded two Hole in one's, but his most distinguished award was winning his flight in the club's annual Club Championship at the age of 80. He also had the unique pleasure of playing a round of golf at his "Dream" course of Pebble Beach on his 70th Birthday.
David is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Antonette (Genovese) Harrison of Gloucester, his faithful sons, David J. Harrison Jr. and his wife Lisa of Gloucester; Anthony Harrison of Gloucester; his beloved daughter Catherine Curcuru and her husband Phil of Gloucester; 5 grandchildren Colin Harrison, Julia Harrison, Sabella Curcuru, Angelena Curcuru, and Elizabeth Harrison as well as many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, David was predeceased by his stepfather, Jeffery Demirs; two brothers, William J. Harrison Jr. and Thomas L. Harrison; and his very special granddaughter Caleigh Harrison.
David's funeral mass will be celebrated at our Lady of Good Voyage Church, 142 Prospect Street, Gloucester, on Thursday December 11th, at 10:00 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in David's name to the Caleigh Harrison Scholarship c/o Institute for Savings 4 Parker Street Gloucester, MA 01930.
