Peabody - Donald K. Usher, affectionately known as Don, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2026, in Peabody, Massachusetts. He was a beloved brother, uncle, great-uncle, coach, mentor, and friend whose warmth and generosity touched many people.

Don was born on January 24, 1945, in Bethesda, MD to Donald K. Usher and Margaret C. Usher. He grew up in Annisquam, MA, directly across from Mount Adnah Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest in the family plot. As a boy, he spent countless hours playing there, and Annisquam remained close to his heart throughout his life.

A graduate of Boston University, Don built a distinguished career around his lifelong passion for tennis. He traveled the world with professional tennis player Anne Smith and worked with renowned coach Vic Braden. Over the years, he coached women's tennis at Purdue University, Harvard University, Syracuse University, and Wake Forest University. He also coached at tennis clubs throughout the United States, sharing his knowledge, encouragement, and love of the game with countless players.

Throughout his career, Don worked with more than 35 women professionals, both full-time and part-time, many of whom represented their countries in international competition. Among his most well-known pupils were Anne Smith and Gigi Fernández, who together won fourteen Grand Slam doubles titles. His players earned selections to prestigious team competitions, including the Wightman Cup for both the United States and Great Britain.

Sports were one of Don's greatest passions. He especially loved tennis, golf, and sailing. He was also an avid car enthusiast, with a particular fondness for Corvettes. While he loved competition and adventure, he also appreciated life's quieter moments and had a special soft spot for cats, whose companionship brought him great joy over the years.

Those who knew Don will remember his kindness and willingness to help others. One favorite family story perfectly captures his generous spirit. One Christmas, his young niece desperately wanted a Cabbage Patch doll, the most sought-after toy of the season. With stores sold out everywhere, it seemed impossible to find one. Don happened to be traveling in Japan and arrived home on Christmas morning carrying a bride-and-groom Cabbage Patch doll set for his excited niece. It was a gift that became a treasured family memory and a reflection of the thoughtfulness that defined him.

Don was a former member of the Annisquam Yacht Club and maintained a deep connection to the community where he was raised.

He is survived by his sister, Susan U. Lange and her husband, Jerry; his niece, Jennifer Bennett and her husband, John; his nephew, Brett Lange and his wife, Lyndsey; and his beloved great-nephews and great-niece, Kevin Bennett, Charlie Lange, Jake Bennett, Steven Lange, and Andrew Bennett.

Don will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He will be remembered for his love of sports, his adventurous spirit, his dedication to coaching, and, most of all, his caring heart. The lessons he taught, the friendships he built, and the memories he created will live on in all who knew and loved him.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at Mount Adnah Cemetery, 86 Leonard Street, Gloucester, MA. Family and friends are invited to attend. Casual attire and sturdy footwear are recommended.
