Elizabeth A. Garrigan Obituary

Gloucester, MA and Rockport - Elizabeth Anne "Bette" Garrigan, 93, of Gloucester and Rockport, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2026.

Born in Boston on February 8, 1933, Bette was the beloved daughter of Augustine and Elizabeth Gosse, both originally from Newfoundland, Canada. Known affectionately to family and friends as "Bette," she lived a life centered on love, family, music, laughter, and kindness.

Bette worked for more than 20 years at Cape Ann Savings Bank, but her greatest joy and proudest accomplishment was always her family. She was the heart of her home — the ultimate mom, Nama, Nonnie, aunt, cousin, and friend — and had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel like they were her favorite.

She found happiness in life's simple pleasures: reading, birdwatching, singing songs from every genre, and gathering with the people she loved most. Her voice and laughter filled every room she entered.

Bette is survived by her loving children: Mickey Garrigan and his wife, Kathy of Plymouth, Mass, Bobby Garrigan and his wife Lori of Foxborough, Mass, Loretta Stride and her husband, Bill of Littleton, New Hampshire, Liz Finer and her husband David of Rockport, Mass, Christine Garrigan of Gloucester, Mass, and Gus Garrigan and his wife Kerry of Walpole, MA.

She also leaves behind 15 cherished grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; more than 45 nieces and nephews — many of whom lovingly considered her their godmother — as well as many dear cousins and lifelong friends. And her beloved sister Marcia O'Brien of Clearwater, Florida.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Robert V. Garrigan; parents, Augustine and Elizabeth Gosse; sisters, Loretta Keefe, Mary Hickey, Thomasina Corey, Joanne Doyle, and Dorothy Hay; and her brothers, Richard Gosse and Thomas Gosse.

During the final six months of her life, Bette resided at Seacoast Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, where she formed many meaningful friendships, adored her caretakers, and especially loved her bingo games. She took great pride in announcing whenever she was the "big winner" of the day.

Bette brought joy everywhere she went and leaves behind a family forever shaped by her warmth, humor, generosity, and unconditional love.

Bette was also a devoted supporter of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and deeply believed in the hospital's mission to provide care and hope to children and their families.

A celebration of Bette's life will be held at the end of the summer. Details will be shared by the family at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or mailed to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
