Gabriella Bergamini Mulcahy Obituary
Rockport - Gabriella Maria Piera Beatrice Bergamini Mulcahy "Biucci" passed away on May 22, 2026 at the age of 95. She leave's behind a well known legacy for her time as a Petroleum Engineer, Embryologist, Geneticist, Artist, award winning Poet, and author of many scientific textbooks and books including the last novel that Umberto Eco ever read.
Gabriella was a Fulbright Scholar, the USA's first female petroleum engineer and member of ENI's first research team. One of the first scientists to publish a theory on the existence of epigenetics in pollen. She lived long enough to see her theories confirmed and prove her doubters wrong.
She delighted in hosting family, friends, and colleagues from around the world. She prepared elaborate dinners, often times impromptu, and treasured family meals during which she passed on a love of cooking to her children and grandchildren.
Her cupboards were always filled with hand decorated jars of homemade jam, which she used to make her famous crostatas. Her crostate were her expression of love for those who were lucky enough to receive one. For her, a life worth living must always have good chocolate, spumante and strong coffee available. If she had any regrets she "joked" that it was that she hadn't been nominated for a Nobel. There is something poetic about the fact that she left the day after Carlo Petrini. Perhaps they are now debating recipes and slow abundant meals while sharing a plate of agnolotti, una bagna cauda or enjoying a fritto misto piemontese.
She was a devotee of Don Orione and of The Madonna Della Guardia, she was a proud Italian and even prouder Tortonese. When asked why she had never applied for US citizenship, she replied that she would happily become a US citizen the day there was a president she could be proud of...
She lived a life of adventures and treasured her marriage of 64 years to the New Englander she met in 1960 in Berkeley, California. She was also a devoted resident of Amherst and New England where she spent most of her married life and raised her family. She loved travel especially spontaneous mini weekend trips in Italy and throughout New England. She loved being outside with her family especially going cross-country skiing, going on long walks or hikes, and swimming in the ocean or the sea in Italy .
Born at home in Tortona on May 14, 1931, to Celia Ciucci and Natalio Bergamini. Predeceased by her parents and brother Giorgio, she leaves behind her husband David, her children Amy and Nathaniel, their spouses Stephen and Jessica, and grandchildren Daniela, Juliana, Giuseppina and Federico and her family in Italy and Switzerland including her beloved Cousin/Brother Antonio and his wife Ruth and her dear amici del cuore, Teresa and Maria.
A funeral Mass will be held in St. Joachim Church, 56 Broadway, Rockport, MA 01966, on Thursday, June 4 at 10 a.m. Friends and family are cordially invited to attend.
