Gertrude T. (Goodwin) Shea, 94, formerly of Maplecrest, died December 14, 2016, at Langdon Place of Exeter.

Born Nov. 3, 1922, in Gloucester, the daughter of Caleb and Lucy P. (Hagen) Goodwin, she lived in Newmarket since 1953.

During World War II she served in the Navy as a Wave.

For 10 years, Gert was Executive Director of the Exeter Hampton Chapter of the Red Cross, retiring in 1988. Gert was a volunteer for many years at local blood mobiles.

She was a member of the Robert G. Durgin A.L. Post #67 in Newmarket, and the Newmarket Senior Citizens.

She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church and a former member of the Catholic Daughters of America.

Her husband, Owen J. Shea, Sr., died in 2006, and Gert is survived by a son, Owen (Jody) J., Jr. (Dawn) of Chattanooga, Tenn.; daughters, Carol A. McClard (Harry) of New Bern, N.C., Sandra E. Conley (Matt) of Newmarket, and Lori P. Lampert (David) of Portsmouth; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her eight siblings, William, Donald, Edward, Helen, Doris, Leora, Janice and Barbara; as well as her step-granddaughter, Charlayne McClard. Gert is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, Dec. 21, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Church, Newmarket. Burial with military honors will be held in the spring in Calvary Cemetery, Newmarket.

A visiting hour will be held prior to the Mass from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter Street, Newmarket. American Legion services will be held at 10 a.m.

Family flowers only, and should friends desire, memorials may be made to The American Red Cross or a non-profit of one’s choice.
