Gloucester - Harold Eugene "Gene" Kesterson of Gloucester, passed away on Wednesday, July 31, 2019, at Kaplan Hospice House in Danvers following a brave battle with acute myeloid leukemia.
Gene was born in Nelsonville, Ohio, on March 11, 1922, the son of the late Anna (Hartsock) Kesterson and Charles Henry Kesterson.
As a child, Gene worked the family farm along with his siblings; leaving school at the age of 13 he went to work in a coal mine. A cave-in left him, his dad, and some other miners trapped for three days. He never went back to coal mining but joined the Conservation Core where he worked as a lumberjack and explosives expert in Price, Utah. Following that and some odd jobs, including working the Ohio Railroad, Gene joined the U.S. Coast Guard where was stationed in Gloucester; watching the waters of the back shore and Good Harbor Beach for German U-boats; this is where, on the second foot bridge to Good Harbor Beach, he met the love of his life, Mary Blair, to which he was married for 74 years.
Gene worked several jobs in Gloucester including Davis Brothers, Gloucester Building Supply, Tallys, LePages and the Gloucester DPW as the city carpenter. He also volunteered several years at the Addison Gilbert Hospital coffee shop where his wife was the manager. He loved building boat flower boxes and whirly gigs down his basement. He was a member of the Rockport American Legion and the Gloucester Elks. Gene always had a smile on his face when greeting friends and strangers and will be remembered as a hard-working, happy man.
Gene has predeceased by his wife, Mary (Blair) Kesterson.
He is survived by his two sons, Charles "Lenny" Kesterson of Florida, William Kesterson and his spouse Julie of Gloucester, and his daughter, Karen J. Stanton and her spouse David of Gloucester; grandchildren, Lori (Kesterson) Rodriguez, Jason Kesterson, Joshua Kesterson, Daniel Stanton, Kenneth Kesterson, Kevin Kesterson and Scott Stanton; 15 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 10, at 11 a.m., at the Gloucester United Methodist Church, 436 Washington Street, Gloucester, MA. Memorial donations can be made to the Cape Ann Animal Aide, 4 Paws Lane, Gloucester, MA 01930. Arrangements by the Campbell Funeral Home, 61 Middle St., Gloucester, MA.
