Jane Dorothy Edwards Obituary

Rockport - Jane Dorothy Edwards was born in Brooklyn, NY to Arnold Frederick Edwards and Antoinette Buckout Edwards. She was the second daughter, joining her older sister, Francis (known as Chickie).

In the city, Jane's father worked in a ball bearing factory and her mother was a nurse, but the family later moved to Antrim, New Hampshire, where they tended a farm. Jane grew up surrounded by her grandmother's German chatter. Her favorite cow on the farm was named Penny.

As a young woman, Jane worked as a telephone operator, and she loved the energy of it — answering calls and connecting the wires quickly so that everyone could reach one another. In many ways, she was a facilitator from the very beginning.

She attended Colby-Sawyer, a two-year women's college, where she and ten friends once tied a six-pack of beer to a string, lowered it into the river to keep it cold, then pulled up chairs and enjoyed it together.

Jane married Alexander Edwards in New York City and made her home there. She worked at McCall's Magazine and later at Sports Illustrated, where she served as an office manager. She and Alexander had two children, Arnold Frederick Edwards II and Alexandria Edwards.

Jane eventually moved to Rockport, where she built a business caring for elders and others who needed support in their own homes. She had a gift for helping people find joy, and she wrote a book about it, Caring for Caring.

Jane is survived by both her children, three dazzling grandchildren, Tatum, Micah, and Isaac--and her sister, Francis Edwards.
