Maricopa, AZ - Jerome (Jerry) F. Lake passed away suddenly September 27, 2019 in Maricopa, Ariz. He was born in Lynn, Mass., and attended Essex Aggie for high school, then went on to Cornell University where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1958. He served in the U.S. Army for six months then the Reserves, being honorably discharged in 1968 as a Captain U.S. Army Armor. In 1959 he married Mary Thankful (Petie) Clawson with whom he shared a loving marriage for many decades, caring faithfully for her at home in recent years until her death. He was a teacher for many years, first at Essex Aggie and then at Andover. They bought a home on Walker Creek in West Gloucester, where they had three children and numerous animals and bought the first of many boats. For two years in the early 1970s he and Petie served as houseparents for A Better Chance program in Andover. In later years they moved first to Magnolia and then to Cape Coral, Fla., where they enjoyed many years sailing and golfing. When Petie developed Alzheimer's they moved to Boise, Idaho, to be near their daughter. Since Petie's death Jerry moved to Maricopa, Ariz., for the warmer climate and the congenial company of the same generation.
He will be missed by daughter Laurel Lake (James) McGuire of Boise, Idaho, Peter Lake (Cathy) of Magnolia, Mass., and Ian Lake (LeeAnne) of New Hampshire; and grandchildren Nathan and Quinn McGuire; Jenna Lake; Brittany, Heather and Meghan Lake and Katy McCabe; and great-granddaughter Amelia Charles. He also leaves many nieces and nephews, and bridge and golf friends in Cape Coral, Arizona; and elsewhere.
There will be no funeral; the family will gather later to say goodbye to his ashes. An online memorial page at www.Never-Gone.com/memorials/jerrylake has a section to leave memories, condolences, or tributes and contains more information. Donations may be made by those inclined to Habitat for Humanity or Alzheimer's research charities, or to any marine life charities in his name.
