Gloucester - Mr. John W. "Jack" Sawyer, 82, of Gloucester and Port Orange, Fla., beloved husband of Linda (Purdy) Sawyer, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, September 17, 2019, at the Halifax Health Hospice in Port Orange, Florida, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Gloucester, he was the son of the late John Warren Sawyer and Dorothy (Benson) Andrade. He was raised and educated in Gloucester, attending St. Ann's grammar school and was a graduate of Gloucester Vocational High School.

An honorably discharged veteran, Mr. Sawyer proudly served his country as an Electricians Mate Third Class for the United States Navy, aboard the submarine U.S.S. Corporal.

Mr. Sawyer began a long and distinguished career as an Electrician. He was appointed to the position of Electrical Inspector by the Mayor for the City of Gloucester where he served his community for many years, with his unique ability to deal with the intricacies of city government and yet, would put a home owner at ease with his quick smile and outgoing personality.

Following his retirement, Jack pursued his second passion, golf. He had been employed at the Cape Ann Golf Course for several years where he was also a member. He played in the Chargers Golf League, the Essex Wreck League and the F.W. Webb Golf League. Jack was also a life member of the Gloucester Elks, a longtime member of the AMVETS and a member of the Disabled American Veterans.

Dedicated to his family and community, Jack was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was the face of the Chargers Youth Program where he was past president and coach for many years. He loved shaping the youth of Gloucester and providing them with the tools they would need to succeed in life, through team sports, competition and camaraderie. He coached softball and was ever present in the Cape Ann Pee Wee Football League where he excelled as a coach and later served as commissioner for the league. Jack was truly proudest when celebrating his children and grandchildren's many milestones and accomplishments, and the accomplishments of those he mentored along the way. He will be fondly remembered for his quick wit, his ever-present smile and his ability to put you at ease. He never met a stranger; only a friend. He will be deeply missed by his loving family and many friends.

Surviving Jack, in addition to his wife Linda with whom he shared 59 years of marriage, are his daughter Jeanne Polito and her husband David of Graham, N.C.; his sons, John Sawyer and his wife Linda of Rockport and Jason Sawyer and his husband Alex Betancourt of Riviera Beach, Fla.; his four grandchildren, Kellie D'Angelo and her husband David of Gloucester, John Matthew Sawyer of Gloucester, Jon Polito of Hendersonville, Tenn., and Deanna Polito of Graham, N.C.; his great-grandchildren, Cora and Parker D'Angelo; his siblings, Donald Sawyer and his wife Carol, Dianne Frost and her husband Bruce all of Gloucester, Judy Purinton and her husband Arnold of Charlemont, Mass., James Sawyer and his wife Julie of Orange City, Fla., Joseph Sawyer and his wife Becky of Venice, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.
