Gloucester - Jonathan Clifton Pope, passed away peacefully at his Marble Street home in Gloucester on Saturday, December 20, 2025, at the age of 77, surrounded by his family, after a difficult final month with cancer. He leaves behind his wife, Susan, of 43 years, his two children James and Gregory and their significant others, George and Dani.

Jonathan was born on September 4,1948, the second of three sons, to Clifton T. and Charlotte R. (Atwater) Pope. He graduated from Gloucester High School in 1966. Jonathan then attended New York University for a year and then North Shore Community College. Shortly after, Jonathan traveled cross-country which was filled with many work and life experiences along the way.

Upon returning to Gloucester, Jonathan built his skills in carpentry working locally and

later with Kirk Noyes, which included the renovation of 92 Main St., after it was damaged by a fire. In the late 1970s he started his own general contracting business, Shelter, focusing on home renovations and conversions.

Jonathan later continued his education with night classes at Boston Architectural College. Jonathan then taught carpentry at the Wreath School in Topsfield,

an alternative high school for at-risk teens. There, he met his future wife, Susan Fiamingo, a fellow teacher who led the math program. They married on April 17,1982. They had two sons, James and Gregory and finally settled in the family home on Marble Street. In 1984, using his training and skill set he went on to establish Pope Cabinets. Over many years he produced custom casework and millwork for homes and businesses across Cape Ann and Massachusetts.

During his life, Jonathan coached Pee Wee hockey with his dad, Cliff, played softball on his own Shelter team and the Rhumbline team, as a pitcher. He became an avid boater, gardener and a car enthusiast. Jonathan loved going to the Fiamingo home near Ogunquit Beach with family and friends, in the summer. He loved attending music concerts at smaller venues and enjoyed introducing his friends to new music along the way. He also hosted countless parties and cookouts for family, friends and neighbors.

Jonathan was also deeply committed to public education. He served 20 years on the Gloucester School Committee, including eight years as chairman. During that time, he helped guide the rebuilding of West Parish Elementary School and the planning and construction of East Veterans Elementary School. He also worked closely with the Gloucester Fishermen Athletic Association on the renovation of Newell Stadium, at Gloucester High School.

Jonathan is survived by his wife, Susan Pope of Gloucester; his oldest son, James Pope and his partner, Kamonkiat "George" Wirunsawanya of Honolulu; his younger son Gregory Pope and his partner, Danielle "Dani" Patrice of Gloucester; his brothers, Andrew T. and Judith Pope of Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, and Jeffrey A. Pope of Gloucester; his niece, Julia T. Pope and husband Stephen Chrisomalis of Windsor, Ontario, Canada; his great-nephew, Arthur Chrisomalis of Windsor, Ontario; his aunt, Rita Pope of Chelmsford; his brother-in-law, John Fiamingo and his wife Laura Chapman of Burlington; and many cousins and friends. In addition to his parents, Jonathan was predeceased by his in-laws, Frederick and Antoinetta Fiamingo.

Jonathan's wake will be held on Wednesday, January 21st, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester. The service will be held on Thursday, January 22, at 11 a.m. at John's Episcopal Church on 48 Middle St. The collation will be held right after the service from 12:15 to 3:15 p.m. at Cruiseport Gloucester at 6 Rowe Square.
