St. Petersburg, FL - Joseph Giacalone, 64, of St. Petersburg, Fla., formerly of Gloucester, Mass., passed away on January 25, 2020, peacefully at Suncoast Hospice Center after a long and hard fought illness.

Joe was born in Mazara del Vallo, Sicily, on February 28, 1955, son of the late Captain Giovanni "John" Giacalone and Caterina (Ingrande) Giacalone. He came to the U.S. with his parents and five siblings in 1966, moving to St. Louis before settling in Gloucester, Mass.

Joe was a lifelong commercial fisherman, who fished for years with family on their boats. He captained his own boat, Captain Emerson, before moving to Madeira Beach, Fla., where he fished and captained commercial boats until he retired.

Joe loved to work with his hands, creating unique and original pieces of art, from lighthouses made of beach rocks and glass, to wood carvings. Each piece of art inspired by his years on the sea.

Upon retirement, while in Florida, Joe gained a passion for his plants and gardens, which he tended to and enjoyed showing his children and grandchildren.

Joe was a proud father to his kids, and supported them in all their endeavors. He was especially proud of all of his grandchildren, whom he loved with all his heart. He loved having picnics with them when they were little and loved spending as much time with them as he could. He loved hearing about their games, recitals, and accomplishments.

Joe is survived by his children, Caterina (Giacalone) Doyle and her husband, Jason, of Gloucester, John Joseph Giacalone and his wife, Kristin of Peabody, Joseph "Joey" Giacalone, of St. Petersburg, Fla., Bill "Billy" Brown, of Gloucester, and Jacqueline (Giacalone) Masters of Seattle, Washington; his grandchildren, Lila Doyle, Julia Doyle, Tyler Giacalone, Victoria Giacalone, Dylan Giacalone and Joey Giacalone.

Joe is survived by his siblings, brother Nino Giacalone, and his wife Angelina of New Hampshire, brother Andrew Giacalone, and his wife Giovanna of Palm Harbor, Fla., sister Rosa (Giacalone) Buscaino, and her husband Michael of Gloucester, Antoinette (Giacalone) Scuderi and her husband Giuseppe of Gloucester, and Nikki (Giacalone) Lopes and her husband Miguel of Gloucester. He is survived by many nieces and nephews whom he loved very much.

Respecting Joe's last wishes, there will not be any services or visiting hours.
