Gloucester - Joseph L. Goncalves, of Gloucester, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at Beverly Hospital.

Joseph was born in Faial, Acores on October 1, 1928, son of the late José Leal and Zulmita Andrade. He immigrated to Gloucester, MA in 1962. He had a variety of jobs, but his loved job was being on the water working for Rose's Oil.

Joe had a love of life and adventure. He enjoyed travelling and being with friends and family. Over the years Joe was very involved with crowning ceremonies at Our Lady of Good Voyage Church and a long-standing member of the D.E.S. Portuguese club.

He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Joe is survived by many dearly loved nieces, nephews and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary and his brother, Fernando Leal.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church on Friday, May 15, 2026, at 11 a.m. followed by his burial in Calvary Cemetery, Gloucester. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend.


In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in his name to Our Lady of Good Voyage Church, 142 Prospect St. Gloucester, MA 01930.
