Gloucester - Joseph B. Moceri, son of the late Matteo and Vincenza (Orlando) Moceri, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sept. 11, 2019, at Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Gloucester. He was the husband of the late Tina (Longo) for 55 years. Joe attended Gloucester schools, graduating from Gloucester High School in 1954. Joe marched in the St. Ann's CYO Marching Band in the early 50s. While in high school, Joe was a member of the ROTC Marching Band, playing drums. He marched for the Eisenhower presidential inauguration parade in Washington D.C. While in high school, he helped form a dance band with fellow band members called the Starlighters, playing for proms and dances throughout the North Shore. He marched with the GHS Alumni Band as well.
After finishing high school, Joe continued his hobby of playing drums with local Jazz musicians. He was very fortunate to play with such notable Jazz players as Herb Pomeroy, Ike Roberts, Coleman Hawkins and many others.
While in school, he met Danny Bloomfield who would become his mentor. Danny heard Joe play and liked what he heard. Danny helped Joe become a good Jazz drummer. People called Danny "Fatha." "Fatha" got jobs for Joe to jam sessions at various places. Ipswich was a great place for music because a lot of very good and professional players came to sit in on jam sessions. Joe learned a lot at these sessions and met some very good musicians. He played for many years with Galen's Big Band all over the North Shore and N.H.
He was a member of the B.P.O. Elks local 892, enjoyed riding his motorcycles all over New England, especially during Bike week in Laconia, N.H., as well as horseback riding and listening to and playing jazz music. He loved his hometown of Gloucester and before his illness prevented him, Joe attended every St. Peter's Fiesta, watching the processional of the St. Peter statue, listening to the various bands at the bandstand, watching the seine boat races and the greasy pole from Pavilion Beach as well as experiencing the Blessing of the Fleet from Stacey Boulevard. He also never missed a GHS high school football game, a Horribles Parade or the Rockport parade and bonfire. Joe especially enjoyed coffee runs and long rides with his cousins Ambrose (Amby) Lovasco and Carlo (Charlie) Orlando, although he would sometimes conveniently "forget" his wallet when it was his turn to buy. Above all, Joe adored his family, cherishing time spent with them for holidays, birthdays and casual get-togethers.
Joe is survived by five children, Theresa of Hudson, N.H., Sandy Mansfield and her husband Raymond (Rick) of Essex, Mass., Joseph Jr. of Gloucester, Michael of Lowell, Mass., Paul and his wife Kimberly of Hudson, N.H.; eight grandchildren, Tim Moceri and wife Katelynn, Raymond (Rick) Mansfield and wife Jevon, Tom Mansfield and wife Rebecca, Joseph III and Alexander, Veronica and Vincent, and Tina Marie Moceri; and two great-grandchildren Aliya and Everett Mansfield.
He was predeceased by all of his siblings, baby brother Samuel; brothers Sebastian (Busty), Carlo, Peter, and Samuel; and sisters Grace, Blanche (Genovese) and Vita (Ciarametaro). He also leaves sister-in-law Agnes (Dolly) Provost; and brother- and sister-in-law Alphonse (Sonny) and Donna Longo; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Joe's family wants to extend a special thank you to his sister-in-law Agnes (Dolly) Provost for being by his side, especially during his final months. Dolly also provided love and support to Joe's children during this difficult time.

His funeral Mass will be held at Holy Family Parish (St. Ann's Church), 60 Prospect Street, Gloucester, on Friday, September 20, 2019, at 9:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Interment at Calvary Cemetery, Gloucester.
