Leona V. (Watson) Dewhurst
Born in Saugus to the late Frederick J and Leda (Carter) Watson, she was the youngest of nine children. She graduated from Lynn English High School in 1942. She worked at Champion Lamp in Lynn and Sylvania in Danvers for many years.
Leona was a happy, caring person who loved family and friends and enjoyed the celebrations and family cookouts at her home. She loved sitting out in her yard enjoying the flowers and feeding the birds and her chipmunks, who would eat out of her hands.
Leona was a member and married at the Quaker Church in Lynn. Upon its closing, she became a member of St Stephens Episcopal Church in Lynn where she was a Sunday School Teacher. She was a member of St Paul Lutheran Church in Gloucester at the time of her death. She was also an active member of Eastern Star. Leona enjoyed the music and fellowship of her religious life, and she especially enjoyed listening to her daughter singing with Share the Music and never missed a performance; she would sing along from the audience, never missing a word.
In her later years, Leona enjoyed the gatherings for birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, baptisms, and holidays involving five generations of which she was the matriarch. Her family is what she lived for.
Leona was the mother of Carolyn L. Stowell, wife of David of Gloucester; George L. Dewhurst, husband of Marsha of Alton, N.H.; and Ronald L. Dewhurst of Saugus. She also leaves seven grandchildren, Sean Dewhurst, Dawn Freeman, Michael Dewhurst, Heidi Colclough, David Stowell, Jacquelyn Blanchette, and Robert Paquette; eight great-grandchildren; Shaina Bingle, Chyanne Stowell, Stephanie and Haley Blanchette, Christopher Dewhurst, Kayla Smallcanyon, Tarra Kingsbery, and Kayla Williams; four great-great grandchildren, Kiyah Blanchette, Violet and Rose Bingle, and Carson Kingsbery. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and a special nephew, George Farrell.
She was predeceased by two granddaughters, Heather Kraus and Michelle Paquette; and eight siblings, Arthur, Fred, Louis, Samuel, and Otis Watson, Eva Smith, Ruth Gagne, and Leda Farrell.
The family would like to thank the Home Care Personnel with special thanks to Janet for helping us keep Leona in the home which she loved, and her hairdresser, Peggy.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 28, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church.
