Marion M. "Mim" Frost Obituary
Ipswich - Ipswich - Marion (Mim) Margaret O'Connell Frost died peacefully on August 18, 2025, in the comfort of her beloved Ipswich home. She lived a quietly extraordinary life, guided by curiosity, kindness, and a deep appreciation for the world around her.
Born in Gloucester on January 31, 1929, Mim was the middle child of John B. and Celia E. (Brooks) O'Connell. A proud "Gloucester girl," she loved storms, the sea, and the wild places of New England. She said she liked living on the edge, rather than in the middle. At age eleven, she began hiking in the White Mountains, recording her adventures with careful penmanship in a photo album that foreshadowed the books she would later write.
Mim's love story with David Frost began in high school chemistry class and endured until his passing in 1998. They married in 1951 and raised four children together. Mim said she "kept him on his toes" with her spontaneity and curiosity, and together they introduced their family to art, music, and the joys of the outdoors.
Education was central to Mim's life. She earned degrees from Boston University and Lesley University, and devoted many years to teaching in Ipswich schools. She guided her students with patience and affection, saying she was more like a grandmother than a teacher, encouraging them to read, write, and take pride in their penmanship.
Mim was also a lifelong learner. She embraced photography after retirement, studying at the Maine Photographic Workshops and exhibiting her work solo and as part of "The High Street Ladies." She authored photographic memoirs My Gloucester: Views of a Provincial and Mother of Mine: A Tribute to Celia Elizabeth Brooks O'Connell, which was published shortly before her death. At age 81, she took up drumming, immersing herself in jazz rhythms and the joy of learning anew.
Her curiosity carried her across the globe. She traveled to every continent, often choosing remote destinations—the Himalayas, Patagonia, Newfoundland, and both polar regions—drawn especially to landscapes of ice, penguins, and polar bears. Closer to home, she was a devoted gardener, leading the Town and Country Garden Club twice as president and nurturing her own natural landscapes from dawn to dusk.
Mim gave generously to her community. She was a trustee of the Ipswich Public Library for nearly 30 years, and served on the YMCA of the North Shore's corporate board, where she was especially proud of her role in developing affordable housing. She also counseled women facing breast cancer after surviving her own diagnosis.
She was known for her warmth, quick wit, and contagious laugh. A gifted letter writer, she often reached out to those in need of encouragement. Spiritually, she was a seeker, finding inspiration in retreats with Thich Nhat Hanh and in the poetry of Mary Oliver, whose words she made her own: "Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it."
Mim was predeceased by her husband David, her daughter Amy Brooks (Frost) Cordeau, her brother John B. O'Connell, Jr. and her sister Marjorie (O'Connell) Smith. She is survived by her children Anne True of Taunton; Martha Frost of Ipswich and partner George Rothe; and Ben Frost and wife Christine of Warner, NH. She was beloved grandmother to Anne's children Becci Pishkin and husband Dave, with their children Kaleigh Maitland and husband Kyle, and Jonah; Dan True and wife Jessica, with their daughter Scarlett; and Kate True and husband Patrick Mussari, with their daughter Charlotte. She was also cherished by Ben's children Greta Frost Ford and husband Joshua Ford, and by his daughter Persie; Matthew Frost and wife Angie Feak; and by Christine's children Charlie Walker and Jessica Walker.
